CONVERGENCE
The first concert will be centered around three of the basic human needs: nature, spirituality, and community. My concept for this program began with the idea of the "north meeting south". Since I am from the Northern Hemisphere and the singers are from the Southern Hemisphere, I wanted to draw on the thought of us coming together for this concert. I set out to find music from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, without limiting myself to a specific genre or period of music.
After selecting the repertoire, I began to find three prevalent ideas: nature, spirituality, and community. Most people have a strong need for community (family, friends, neighbours, etc) and a yearning to explore the things in this world that are possibly greater than ourselves and governing the universe. In addition, a lot of people have a strong urge to commune with nature by either hiking, looking at the stars, swimming, biking, or simply being outside.
The repertoire listed below speaks to one or more of these three basic needs. A very exciting moment of this concert will be the World Premiere of a commissioned work that involves the joining of a Maori poem with a new tune being written by the up and coming American composer, Zachary J. Moore.
