"Illuminations" will be the final concert of the 3rd season for Inspirare. As part of this season, we have celebrated larger choral works, expanded our ensemble, and increased our awareness in the arts community of greater Wellington. This concert will feature 3 masses and 6 choirs, 3 soloists, and our first performance with a chamber orchestra.
In the first half, we will perform Missa Brevis by Imant Raminsh. Imant is a Canadian composer and this mass setting is written for women's voices, soprano solo, and piano. Our women from Inspirare will be joined by the Queen Margaret College Chorale and Altissime from Samuel Marsden College in Karori.
The second piece will be Missa Kenya by Paul Basler. Paul is an American composer who studied abroad in Kenya during his Fulbright scholarship. In addition to composing, Paul is an accomplished horn player. As a result of his experience in Kenya, Paul frequently writes for horn, voices, and utilises sounds and melodies that originate in Kenya. Our men from Inspirare will be joined by the young men of Wellington College Chorale, horn, percussion, and piano.
Our final piece for this splendid evening will feature the work of John Rutter, an English composer whose works have been sung all around the world. Mass of the Children is a setting of the mass which utilises some traditional texts and additional lyrics. This work is set for mixed voices and will feature all of Inspirare, a children's chorus consisting of Wellington Young Voices and Sacred Heart Boys' Choir, soprano and baritone soloists, and an 11-member chamber orchestra.
This is a concert that will feature familiar texts set in new, fresh, and innovative ways. This has been a hallmark of Inspirare since its inception. We want to bring familiar tunes and texts to the arts community of Wellington that have been set in fresh and innovative ways!
